About the CSCS Operatives HS&E Test

The Operatives test is the entry point to a CSCS card for the majority of people working on UK construction sites. Labourers, bricklayers, joiners, plasterers, groundworkers, roofers and most other trades need to pass it before they can apply for a Green, Blue, Gold or Red card, and again every time the card is renewed.

It is set by the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) and sat on a computer at a Pearson VUE test centre. There are centres throughout England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, and you can usually get a slot within a couple of weeks of booking.

What Your Score Means

  • 45 or more – you’re at pass level. Take another mock test to confirm it wasn’t a lucky run, then book.
  • 40 to 44 – close, but the real test feels harder under pressure. Look at where you lost marks and revise those areas before retaking.
  • Under 40 – spend time with the revision material before attempting another full test. Repeating mocks without revising tends to repeat the same mistakes.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a CSCS Operatives mock test?

It’s a practice version of the CITB Health, Safety & Environment test for Operatives. It uses the same format as the real exam – 50 multiple-choice questions, 45 minutes, pass mark of 45 – so you can check your knowledge and get used to the timing before you book.

How many questions are in the CSCS Operatives mock test?

50, the same as the real test. Each has four options and only one correct answer.

What score do I need on the mock test?

Aim for 45 or more, which is the real pass mark. Scoring 47 or 48 in practice gives you a safety margin, because the real test usually feels harder under exam conditions.

Are these the actual CITB test questions?

No. The questions are written to match the topics, style and difficulty of the real test, but they aren’t taken from the official CITB question bank. Use them alongside CITB’s official revision book or app.

Is the mock test the same for Green, Blue and Gold cards?

Yes. Green Labourer, Blue Skilled Worker, Gold Advanced Craft and Red Trainee cards all require the same Operatives HS&E test, so this mock test is suitable for any of them.
