If you want to work on a construction site in the UK, you’ll almost certainly need a CSCS card. The good news is that getting one is simpler than most people think. There are three steps: get the right qualification, pass the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test, and apply through the My CSCS app.
This guide walks you through each step, what it costs, how long it takes, and the mistakes that hold people up.
The short version

Do You Need a CSCS Card?
Strictly speaking, no. There’s no law that says you must have one. But nearly every main contractor and housebuilder in the UK requires a valid card before they’ll let you on site. Turn up without one and you’ll be sent home.
So in practice, if you do any hands-on construction work, you need a card. That includes labourers, all the trades, plant operators, supervisors and site managers.
The people who don’t need one are office staff who rarely visit site, delivery drivers, and visitors who are escorted and don’t do any work.
What You Need Before You Apply
Have these ready and the application takes about ten minutes:
- A qualification for the card you’re applying for, or proof that you’ve registered for one
- A CITB Health, Safety and Environment test pass from the last two years
- Your CITB testing ID (it’s on your test result printout)
- A clear photo of your qualification certificate
- A debit or credit card for the £36 fee
The Apprentice card is free. Everything else is £36.
Step 1 – Get the Right Qualification
The card you get depends on the job you do and the qualification you hold. CSCS won’t issue a card that doesn’t match your occupation, so pick the right route from the start.
Green Labourer Card
This is the entry-level card and the one most people start with. You need one of these:
- Level 1 Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment (never expires)
- An approved one-day health and safety course, such as the CITB Site Safety Plus Health and Safety Awareness course
The Level 1 Award is the better choice if you can get it. The one-day courses are accepted, but they expire, so you’d need to retake one when your card comes up for renewal.
You’ll also need an employer or main contractor to confirm you work as a labourer. If you’re self-employed, a contractor you’re working for can sign this.
Blue, Gold and Black Cards
These are for skilled workers, supervisors and managers:
- Blue Skilled Worker card – NVQ or SVQ Level 2 in your trade, or a completed apprenticeship
- Gold Advanced Craft or Supervisor card – NVQ or SVQ Level 3
- Black Manager card – NVQ or SVQ Level 6 or 7 in construction management
If you’re experienced but don’t have the NVQ, look at on-site assessment. An assessor visits you at work and builds the evidence from what you already do. It’s the most common route for time-served tradespeople.
Trainee, Apprentice and Provisional Cards
Still working towards your qualification? You don’t have to wait:
- Trainee card – for anyone registered for a construction NVQ or SVQ
- Apprentice card – free, for those on a registered apprenticeship
- Provisional card – a six-month card for people on probation with a new employer, issued once only
Can You Get a CSCS Card With No Experience?
Yes, but only the Green Labourer card. You don’t need site experience for that one, just the one-day course and the test.
What you can’t do anymore is get a card on experience alone. The old “grandfather rights” route, called Industry Accreditation, closed to new applicants years ago, and the last cards issued under it expired at the end of 2024. Everyone now needs a recognised qualification, however long they’ve been in the trade.
Step 2 – Pass the CITB Health, Safety and Environment Test
Every card requires a test pass. Which test you sit depends on the card:
- Operatives test – Green, Blue, Red and most Gold cards
- Specialists test – certain trades such as demolition, plumbing and highway works
- Managers and Professionals test – Black card and professional cards
Book through the CITB website or by phone. The fee is £23.50 and you’ll sit it at a Pearson VUE test centre. There are centres across the UK, and you can usually get a slot within a week or two.
The test has 50 questions and you get 45 minutes. You need 45 correct to pass (46 for the Managers and Professionals test). Bring two forms of ID, at least one with a photo, or you’ll be turned away.
Your result appears on screen straight away. A pass is valid for two years, so don’t leave the application too long.

Step 3 – Apply Through the My CSCS App
The My CSCS app is now the main route for individual applicants. Download it from the App Store or Google Play and create an account.
What to Upload
- A clear photo of your qualification certificate, or proof you’re registered for one
- Your CITB testing ID, so CSCS can check your pass
- A photo of yourself for the card
The app reads your certificate and suggests the right card. Check it before you accept. Applying for the wrong card is the most common reason for a delay.
Paying the Fee and Getting Your Card
Pay the £36 fee in the app. Most applications are approved within a few days. Once approved, your digital card appears in the app immediately and you can use it to get on site. The physical card is posted and usually arrives within five working days.
Applying as an Employer
Employers and training providers apply for their workers through CSCS Online rather than the app. The requirements and fee are the same.
Mistakes That Delay Applications
- Applying for a Labourer card when you work in a skilled trade
- Uploading a blurry or cropped certificate photo
- Leaving the application until the test pass is close to expiring
- Missing the employer declaration for the Labourer card
- Using a third-party website that charges extra and applies on your behalf
Avoid these and your card should be approved first time.
How Much Does a CSCS Card Cost?
The card itself is £36. The real cost depends on the qualification you need.

So a Green card costs from around £140 all in. A Blue card is closer to £700 or more.
Two costs catch people out. If you fail the test, you pay £23.50 again to retake. And if your card is lost or damaged, a replacement costs the full £36.
How Long Does It Take to Get a CSCS Card?
For a Green card, plan on two to four weeks:
- Course: one day, but you may wait a week or two for a place
- Test: book once you’re ready, usually within a week or two
- Application: approved in one to five days if your documents are clear
- Card delivery: about five working days
For a Blue or Gold card, the NVQ is the long part. On-site assessment typically takes two to three months. The test and application take the same time as above.
Delays almost always come from the application stage, for the reasons listed above. Get those right and you’ll have your card in under a month.

Some trades hold a partner scheme card instead of a CSCS card. Plant operators use CPCS or NPORS, scaffolders use CISRS, and there are others for demolition and specialist trades. If you’re in one of those, check with your scheme.

Renewing, Replacing or Upgrading Your Card
Renewing
Most cards last five years. The exception is a first-time Green Labourer card, which has been valid for two years since February 2025. Renew it and the next one lasts five.
You can renew up to six months before or after your card expires. You’ll need a fresh CITB test pass from the last two years, and if you used a one-day course for your Green card, you’ll need to redo that too.
Lost or Damaged Cards
Request a replacement through the app. It costs £36, the same as a new card. Your digital card in the app still works while you wait.
Upgrading
Most people move from Green to Blue by completing an NVQ Level 2 in their trade. Do this before your Green card expires and you skip the renewal fee.
